The AuDHD Wombat
The AuDHD Wombat is a 2D character design concept inspired by the neurodivergent children I taught as a former art instructor. It explores many neurodivergent people's first experience of ableism in the home environment.
The character design was conceptualized from an ink blot that looked like an animal wearing headphones. This reminded me of my students who would wear noise-cancelling headphones when they were overstimulated. Likewise, the character sheet consists of poses and expressions based on my students' mannerisms.
The character also wears a weapon shaped like a fidget spinner, a popular toy among many neurodivergent people. The final illustration is rendered in a cartoon style that would appeal to children ages 6 to 12.
